Mike Davids 

 

Coming from a small beach town in southern California, Artist & Photographer Mike Davids is always looking to capture moments in time.  With his feet in a few different pools he has access to a variety of subjects to study, whether it is behind the scenes at a concert, on the beach, or in the studio, Mike is constantly trying to find those small things in life that people tend to overlook, those small details that can evoke a memory or an emotion. Having lived in Australia and travelling the United States, Mexico and Europe, Mike has a view on life that is very unique.
Mike spent three years in Melbourne, Australia studying 35mm black and white photography and fine art; he earned his BFA while attending Swinburne University.
 
When Mike first started to take painting seriously it was a big struggle in the beginning due to him not seeing things correctly, being colorblind he taught himself the spectrum of color through painting. He would read the name of the color on the label and then would find it on a color wheel and place a letter for each color  - resulting in finding what colors are opposite of each other and what colors compliment each other. Through countless hours of trial an error he has become “comfortable” with his colors and continues to produce very vibrant works of art.
 
Mike then started to play with the idea of taking a picture of a subject, then taking that picture and painting it  - and this opened a whole new realm for Mike’s art.
Mike was given an old 35mm manual camera and learned how to take pictures of his soon to be subjects, from that point on he no longer considered him self a painter or even a photographer and just called himself an artist. “Using any and all kinds of tools to help you create a piece of art is what being an artist is “ – Mike Davids
